History of Chiusanico
The ancient town of Chiusanico is situated in the Ligurian inland, 12 km away from the coastline and 400 mt. above sea level. It lies on a ridge, where Oak and Chestnut woods alternate with hills covered in Olive groves, overlooking the valley and the sea. According to several researchers, this was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, although there is no general agreement among historians.
During the medieval period, Chiusanico was the main centre in the Monte Arosio territory, dominated by the Albenga bishops, the Doria Family and the Savoia’s. Some portals and buildings at Castello date back to the 13th century, such as the single-nave church of San Lorenzo. The church of Santo Stefano dates from a later period and still has some splendid 18th century polychrome marble work. Inside the church, you can also admire 16th century paintings by Pancalino & De Rossi.
Chiusanico is well known for its superior quality Olive oil and its classic Pigato and Vermentino wines. The typical local olive variety is known as the "taggiasca" and ranks among the finest in Italy (see www.taggiasca.com)
If you’re a Sport enthusiast you'll find hiking and biking trails situated amongst a myriad of olive groves. For trekking enthusiasts, this is true paradise - countless paths at various altitudes, thousands of fragrant flowers, a pure blue sky and a multicoloured exultation of nature flooded with sunshine. A unique experience to discover the surprising contrast between the Mediterranean sea side and the Alpine country side.
This location is ideal for both beach goers and sport enthusiasts, as neither the beach nor hiking are far away attractions. Imperia, city centre, as well as the several beaches are only 20 minutes away (12km) by car. Other major tourist destinations such as, Montecarlo, the French Riviera, Sanremo, and Alassio can be reached by a 40 minute drive.
Having or renting a car is strongly recommended as Public transportation is not yet adequately organized.
La Casa del Carrugio
Situated in the heart of the historical centre of Chiusanico“Borgo Castello”. This typical Ligurian 19th century house has been completely newly restored (2006) with love and attention to detail and is now split into three apartments.
Each apartment offers the following:
-entrance - living room with kitchenette and sofa-bed
-bedroom with double bed
-bathroom with shower
-Roof top panoramic private terrace with a sweeping view of the landscape, the historical centre and side sea view.
Apartments are fully furnished and equipped.
