Location description:
|
Maleme ist eine historische Ortschaft, gelegen am Meer an der Nordseite vom Westkreta, mit ca. 800 Einwohner. Es liegt an den Füßen von grünen Hügeln, voll mit Oliven-, Orangenbäumen und Weinbergen, zwischen den Flüssen Tavronitis und Geranis. Von seinen Hügeln kann man die Sicht aufs Meer gleichzeitig mit der Sicht auf die 2500 m hohen „Weißen Berge“ genießen. Bei Maleme sind Funde aus der minoischen Zeit bekannt, die man im archäologischen Museum in Chania besichtigen kann.
Maleme ist in der Geschichte bekannt geworden als am 21. Mai 1941 am dortigen Flugplatz die deutschen Fallschirmjäger, zur Besetzung der Insel, gelandet sind. Der deutsche Soldatenfriedhof von Maleme, wo 4465 deutsche Soldaten begraben liegen, erinnert an den 2. Weltkrieg und mahnt zugleich, solche Kriege nicht mehr zu wiederholen.
