| Location description | Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain. Its roots can be traced back to pre-historic times an example of which can be seen at the Pileta cave, a true relic of Andalucía Stone Age art. It is one of the most significant relics from this period as too are the megalithic monuments such as the Dolmen del Chopo. All these sites are outside of the modern day Ronda along with the archaeological ruins of Acinipo, the major Roman settlement in the area. However to understand the great history of the region a visit to all of these should be on your itinerary. The town of Ronda is in the far north west of the province of Málaga and the municipality is one of the boundaries with adjoining Cádiz. It sits on an outcrop of rock surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges that historically made access to the town difficult. Information and news about RondaRonda has a rich cultural heritage starting with the Arabic occupation. Under Muslim rule Ronda became one of the capitals of the five coras that made up Al-Andalus. The influence of the moors can be seen in the architecture as well as the gastronomy and methods of farming that carry through to today. The Muslims were expelled after Ronda was taken by the Reyes Católicos in 1485. This led to the removal of many of the Muslim buildings such as the mosques with major churches built on their foundations. Again in the 18 th century some of the most significant buildings in Andalucía were erected in Ronda examples of which are the plaza de toros and Puente Nuevo. The romantic heritage of the town of the Tajo was forged in the 19 th century with the legendary bandits of the Serranía de Ronda and when the art of modern day bull fighting was perfected in the town. Ronda and the surrounding Serranía are a sum of all these traditions and rich cultural heritage but it is also a modern town that has plenty of hidden delights to be discovered. |
